GTA IV handles cheats better than any game before or after it: they are dialled rather than typed. Niko takes out his phone, enters a number and the effect applies immediately.
This has two practical benefits. The dialled number enters the contact list, so one click is enough next time. More importantly, a cheat cannot start accidentally because the phone must be opened first.
The numbers resemble American telephone numbers and can be read as keypad words: GUN-555-0100 means weapons, COP-555-0100 police and DOC-555-0100 doctor. Remember those three letters and no list is needed.
Do cheats block achievements and 100% completion?
GTA IV handles this unusually fairly. Cheats **do not prevent 100% completion**, contrary to claims about other games.
Most cheats disable achievement unlocking, but only for the saved game in which they are used. Quit and load an older cheat-free save, and unlocking works again.
Some achievements have their own conditions, however, and certain cheats block them permanently, especially those based on wanted levels and escaping police.
The safe method is the usual one: use cheats in a separate saved game and do not overwrite the clean playthrough.
